Jail-Based Intervention

Overview

People with mental and substance use disorders who have not yet been diverted at earlier intercepts may be held in pretrial detention at a local jail while awaiting the disposition of their criminal cases. Jail-based interventions can include programs and health care services that provide medical and behavioral health services to people who need treatment. These programs aim to ensure that a person’s illness is treated even during a jail stay. Jails have used interventions such as establishing partnerships with community-based treatment providers to increase access to treatment within the facility, embedded clinicians, and collaborations with outreach specialists and other partners to ensure successful reentry.
